Botswana / Jack's Camp

Set amidst the seeming emptiness of the vast Makgadikgadi salt pans and grasslands - geophysical relic of a giant super lake - award-winning Jack’s Camp offers a genuine wilderness experience. Classic 1940’s style canvas tents provide atmospheric living graced with Persian rugs and paraffin lamps, the luxury en-suite bathrooms complemented by indoor and outdoor showers, the private veranda provides rugged wilderness views. Candle-lit dinners, inclusive of excellent wines, are served in the elegant mess tent, while a small library and numerous artefacts in the main lodge area have seen the camp designated as ‘national museum of Botswana’. Astronomy evenings provide a unique perspective on the universe; guided walks are led by Zu/’hoasi Bushmen who first accompanied Jack into the area. Explore on quad bikes during the dry season (April - October) and witness the zebra migration during the green season, the area also being renowned for Black-Maned Kalahari Lions, brown hyena and habituated meerkats. Exhilarating helicopter flights have recently been added to the activity options and, from 2018, Jack’s will have a helicopter permanently based there which will be able to take three guests at a time. All three night stays at Jack’s Camp in 2018 will receive a complimentary 20 minute heli flip.

Expert guidance

Stomping ground of expert safari guide, naturalist, botanist and co-owner Ralph Bousfield, this camp is perfectly positioned to explore the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. Surrounded by Zu/'hoasi Bushmen all his life, he can speak their complex click-based language and to experience these communities with someone who knows them intimately is the ultimate draw. Follow footprints through the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and discover one of the wildest and most remote areas in Botswana.

When is the best time to visit Botswana?

The best time to visit Botswana for game viewing in the delta areas is during the dry winter season from April to October when animals are drawn to water sources. Days are warm and sunny although nights can drop below freezing – in October temperatures can be particularly hot. The Okavango area tends to be more moderate than the Kalahari where seasonal differences are more extreme and activities vary according to wet (November – March) and dry (April – October) seasons.
