Surrounded by pristine vineyards, indigenous gardens and reflective water features on the Cape’s oldest farm, the Steenberg has garnered many top accolades. The bedrooms are brighter and airier, whilst the bathrooms have received the majority of attention with the introduction of modern day comforts. There are plans to extend the pool area and add sun loungers too. Guests can enjoy a round of golf on the 18-hole championship course before savouring contemporary comfort food at Catharina’s restaurant – simply cooked and elegantly presented. Feast on seasonal tapas at the stylish and award winning Bistro Sixteen82, where a complimentary wine tasting is included. And, if wine is your thing, the state-of-the-art winery (the second oldest wine-producing estate in South Africa) never fails to impress – their newly released Rattlesnake Sauvignon Blanc represents the more creative side of winemaking. Complimentary daily transfers from the hotel to the Waterfront take around thirty minutes, bringing guests a best-of-both-worlds experience combining the buzz of the city with the rural charm of the Winelands.
A year round destination, but expect cooler weather in the Eastern and Western Capes during winter, between June and August. Mpumalanga stays warm year round with temperatures, humidity and rainfall all increasing in the summer months between October and March. The whales return to the waters around Hermanus from July to November, and the spring months of August and September are particularly colourful along the Garden Route. The prime time for game viewing is generally the drier winter and spring months from April to September when animals frequent the waterholes. During the wetter summer months between October and March, animals can still be viewed but are more widely dispersed – from December to February there may be more sightings of newborn animals.
