Caribbean, Bermuda & Mexico / St Lucia

Luxury Travel: All-time Favourites

Adriaane Pielou, Travel Writer, Condé Nast Traveller and Country Town & House

Too mountainous to ever be as developed as Barbados, as lush as Jamaica but so much smaller you could get around the entire island in a day. And poignantly beautiful, with wild flowers everywhere, miles of dry-stone walls, and a faint undertow of melancholy, St Lucia seems populated largely by calm, witty, hardworking people speaking such measured English they sound like elocution teachers. The island also has some of the best hotels in the Caribbean. The BodyHoliday, for instance: an all-inclusive fitness resort. Brilliant! As for Sugar Beach, is there a more spectacularly located hotel on the planet?

From soaring above the majestic Pitons to sampling jazz and cocoa-infused fare, luxury St Lucia holidays are all about experiencing the island’s laid-back lifestyle and exuberant culture. Just like its national parrot, St Lucia is one of the most visually striking destinations in the Caribbean, much beyond the colourful appearance of its feathered companion. The island itself is a hearty creole pot of 5 star resorts, banana and cocoa plantations, verdant rainforests and vibrant local art, complemented by a generous serving of luxury and tranquillity. Home to capital Castries, the north beckons with butterscotch sand beaches, rum-and-reggae street parties at Gros Islet and an eclectic choice of fine dining experiences, whilst those seeking serenity and seclusion head to the south west of the island near historic Soufrière – home of the mineral-rich mud baths at Diamond Falls. Along the silver sand coast, luxury retreats with three-walled rooms open out onto sweeping terraces, making the most of the unsurpassable views over the Pitons and Caribbean Sea. The utter remoteness and sheer spellbinding beauty of this part of St Lucia makes it one of the most romantic holiday destinations in the Caribbean and an exceptional choice for a luxury honeymoon, where sunset horseback rides and picnics on the beach set the itinerary for the day. Beyond relaxation, there are many other ways to experience St Lucia’s wild and picturesque scenery for couples and families alike; the dark sand beach of Anse Chastanet is the best spot on the island for snorkelling and exploring the coral reefs, whilst a scenic trek up Gros Piton – the larger of the two peaks – rewards you with the most remarkable vistas over the surrounding emerald valleys. For the young at heart, a zip line adventure through the rainforest keeps the adrenalin pumping, whilst leisurely days spent on the golden sands of Pigeon Island and beyond are fun for all the family.

When is the best time to visit St Lucia?

With its tropical climate and temperatures averaging 24°C, St Lucia is a year-round destination, though the best months to visit are generally from mid-December to May, when the island is drier and less humid. During June to November, the humidity level increases and intense tropical showers or occasional storms may be experienced – excellent offers are usually available during these months. A popular choice for luxury family holidays, St Lucia is usually busy around the school holiday periods; we recommend booking a year in advance, especially for the festive season.
