Venice / Belmond Hotel Cipriani

As featured in Luxury Travel: The Editor’s Edit

One of our handpicked hotel recommendations for 2017

Exuding an implacable air of serenity, the Belmond Hotel Cipriani is famed for its luxurious style. It stands in mature gardens on Giudecca Island just four minutes by private launch from Piazza San Marco. This is a destination hotel for the discerning and for the deeply romantic – legend has it that Casanova had a few dalliances in the Cipriani’s manicured gardens. A stunning showcase for contemporary and heritage Venetian craft, the hotel is richly furnished with Murano glass, Fortuny-designed pieces and Rubelli fabrics.

Breathtaking views abound – over the gardens and vineyard, the lagoon or overlooking St Mark’s Square which can easily be reached by boat - from tastefully furnished rooms of the main hotel or from the deluxe annexe of Palazzo Vendramin, a fifteenth century residence linked to the main hotel by a delightful courtyard lined with flowers.

The Michelin-starred Oro Restaurant and Terrace offers elegant dining, whilst Cip’s with its Venetian specialities has a spectacular view of Piazza San Marco. Relax around the heated Olympic-sized seawater swimming pool or in the Casanova Wellness Centre. There is also a red clay tennis court situated on the edge of the lagoon. During the summer months children are entertained at the Smile Club in the gardens. ‘Shirley’, the hotel’s own wooden boat, is on hand for personalised excursions.

When is the best time to visit Italy?

Italy is a year round destination especially for city breaks, with a largely temperate climate with regional variations. Summers are hot especially from Rome southwards, whilst spring and autumn are mild. Winter in the south is warmer and drier than in the northern and central areas which can be much colder with snow fall in the mountainous regions.
