Europe & North Africa / Morocco

The exoticism of Arabia melds with the vibrancy of Africa in Morocco, ancient land of the Berbers. As dusk falls in Marrakech, dancers in traditional costumes and halqa acrobats stir up the still night air. Storytellers recall ancient tales and snake charmers mesmerise onlookers under the glow of kerosene lamps. In the ochre-hued medina, jostle alongside carts and laden mules in a labyrinth of winding derbs. Hawkers trade vast piles of spices in the souks in a vibrantly aromatic scene of red paprika, beige cumin, yellow turmeric and green aniseed. Mint tea is proffered and poured during negotiations, the constant accompaniment to life and daily business. Evocative and exotic, Djemaa el Fna square is a mystical place, transformed each evening into an alfresco kitchen, the ambience aromatised by the scents of tagines of chicken, lamb and couscous sweetened by apricots. Each morning, the sound of ‘muezzin’ calling the faithful to prayer echoes across the city. Throughout Morocco a sense of mysticism pervades, its contrasting landscapes embracing the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas Mountains, the unmapped sands of the Sahara Desert and vibrant cities where deeply traditional cultures assure an unforgettable experience. Trek through tiny Berber villages or travel north to the coastal nirvana of El Jadida or to Ouarzazate, the gateway to the Sahara with verdant oases nestling within its sands.
