Morocco / Kasbah Tamadot

With a name that means ‘soft breeze’ in Berber, this ravishing retreat in the Atlas foothills transcends the merely luxurious. A forty five minute drive from Marrakech, Sir Richard Branson’s hotel lies in extensive grounds brimming with a lush variety of fruit trees, cacti and rambling roses – hidden staircases and courtyards appearing at almost every turn. Inside, eighteen antique-adorned rooms and suites marry traditional Moroccan colours and textures with more modern architectural notes. For added indulgence, nine spectacular Berber Tented Suites are perched on the hillside, five with private Jacuzzi. In the Kanoun restaurant local produce and spices blend to create exquisite Moroccan and international dishes, whilst cooking lessons can be enjoyed on the rooftop terrace accompanied by dramatic views. A deep blue reflecting pool and restful library enhance the tranquil ambience. Relaxation choices are many. Retreat to the Asounfou Spa with hamman and indoor pool for indulgent cosseting, whilst outside lies an infinity-edge pool and Jacuzzi with views to valley and mountain. Meander the pretty garden paths to the tennis courts or explore the breathtaking surroundings on foot or by mule. Take an excursion to the Tin Mal Mosque followed by mint tea with a Berber family in the village of Ouirgane.

North Africa's greatest mountain range

Whilst you may find it hard to drag yourself away from the indulgent cosseting here, the splendour of the encircling High Atlas Mountains is absolutely worth the effort. Led by experienced guides, discover your surroundings in a uniquely traditional way - on the back of one of the hotel's resident mules - visiting a Berber village and taking tea with the locals or journeying into the Toubkal National Park for breathtaking panoramic views. Asni, the nearest village, is particularly worth visiting on a Saturday for the weekly market. Alternatively, you can make your way through the dramatic scenerey by mountain bike or by foot.
