Maldives / Velaa Private Island Maldives

As featured in Luxury Travel: The Editor’s Edit

One of our handpicked hotel recommendations for 2017

Retreat to an enclave that takes luxury to new levels – the name Velaa taken from the local sea turtles. From the air the island forms the turtle’s body, while the head comprises a collection of dream-like overwater villas which feature a private pool and steps leading down to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Villas and residences alike offer generous terraces and shady gazebos, the light-filled interiors being sumptuously furnished for maximum comfort. For those seeking ultimate privacy there’s a romantic pool residence, accessible only by boat, which comes complete with small gym, spa room and sundeck. Dine exactly how you please – Athiri being a divine beachfront destination while the Avi pool bar turns into a convivial cocktail bar by night. Aragu has a vintage champagne lounge; Tavaru houses a Teppanyaki kitchen and a wine cellar – the quite extraordinary three storey wine tower home to over 6,000 wines. While the youngsters are off exploring with the kids’ club, head for the Clarins Spa with its snow room and relaxation pods, play nine holes designed by Jose Maria Olazabal or leave the world in your wake with a splash of watersports from jet skis to catamarans.

Golfers - Practise in Paradise

Velaa Private Island features a nine-hole golf course designed by Spanish golfer and Ryder Cup-winning captain, Jose Maria Olazabal. Renowned for his short game prowess, Jose created nine different tees, six greens, seven bunkers, and a lake as turquoise as the waters the Maldives is famous for. The unsurpassed backdrop and surrounding scenery of the Olazabal Golf Academy provides a paradise for practise. The Golf Academy prides itself on tailoring golf lessons to the individual and the resident Velaa Private Island professionals are fully PGA qualified.

Snow Spa

Back on land breathe in the beauty of Velaa and rejuvenate yourself in the innovative Clarins spa. Experience snow in the Maldives with the country’s first snow room before warming up in the ocean-view sauna and napping in the snooze pod.

Private Yacht

Guests of the Residences are granted exclusive use of the prestigious Velaa yacht – enjoy an idyllic glide along the azure waters whilst savouring the delicious tastes curated by the yacht’s dedicated chef.

When is the best time to visit Maldives?

The Maldives has a hot, tropical climate with sunshine all year round. The most popular months to visit are between November and April during the north-east monsoon when it is dry with very little wind. Whilst there may be rain during some of the summer months, with ever-changing weather patterns and excellent offers, this is becoming an increasingly popular time to travel.
