A two hour drive east of Amangalla along the south coast is the contemporary beachfront resort of Amanwella. Coastal cool slap bang on one of Sri Lanka's best beaches, this is an ideal twin-centre combination.
Drive out into rural Sri Lanka and visit ancient temples and villages where time has slowed to a standstill. Return via Handunugoda tea plantation, just 25 minutes east of Galle, it is the perfect place to refuel on tea and cake.
Between December and April head 40 minutes out of town to Mirissa Harbour for dolphin and blue whale watching from a local fishing trawler.
The best time to visit is generally from November to March when the weather is hot and at its driest, however the ancient cities are best visited from April to September. August is also a popular time to visit, and those travelling during the summer months will benefit from good hotel offers.
