Holiday Type / Star Wars filming locations

Destinations across the globe have been used to present the spectacular planets that make up the Star Wars universe since 1976 - here we highlight some of our favourites.

The third and final instalment of the Star Wars prequel trilogy saw the crew head to Asia for the first time. Filming for Revenge of the Sith took place in Thailand and featured the limestone peaks of Phang Nga Bay as well as the limestone karst mountains of Guilin in China. In this episode, Anakin was also injured on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily and footage of the volcano erupting was used in the background of the scenes set on Mustafar.

The cast of the latest epic, The Force Awakens, flew to Abu Dhabi and the vast expanse of Rub' al Khali Desert, a wilderness that measures in larger than France.

The next Star Wars film is following Game of Thrones to the streets of Dubrovnik. Shooting for Episode VIII took place in March, with all sorts of weird and wonderful creatures spotted within the city walls.
