Sir Richard Branson’s stylish reserve offers not only a luxury safari experience but also an ideal place in which to relax and unwind. Rock Lodge is carved into a natural rock face, eight hundred feet above the reserve, affording dramatic views over the bush towards the Drakensberg Mountains from richly appointed rooms and suites linked by a network of wooden walkways. The Rock Cliff Rooms are spacious and all south facing with views over the vast landscape. The Rock Suite comes with two-bedrooms, ideal for families; the Makwela Suites have private balconies and infinity edge plunge pools. A short distance from Rock lodge and linked by a raised walkway is Cliff Lodge, which when taken on an exclusive basis comes complete with its own ranger, tracker, safari vehicle and chef. Safari walks through the reserve are popular, while morning and afternoon game drives deliver the full-on Big 5 safari experience. Be cossetted in the Aroma Boma Spa with indulgent products by Africology using ingredients such as rooibos, aloe and African potato.
A year round destination, but expect cooler weather in the Eastern and Western Capes during winter, between June and August. Mpumalanga stays warm year round with temperatures, humidity and rainfall all increasing in the summer months between October and March. The whales return to the waters around Hermanus from July to November, and the spring months of August and September are particularly colourful along the Garden Route. The prime time for game viewing is generally the drier winter and spring months from April to September when animals frequent the waterholes. During the wetter summer months between October and March, animals can still be viewed but are more widely dispersed – from December to February there may be more sightings of newborn animals.
