From Aztec civilizations, to the revolutionary art of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, Mexico’s rich cultural history is even more thrilling against a diverse backdrop of palm-fringed coasts, misty jungles and vibrant cities. It’s easy to see why Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton fell in love on the Pacific beaches of the Baja Peninsula, but venture inland to explore the crumbling palaces and grand churches of Oaxaca, fuelled by chilli hot chocolate, or, for the brave, perhaps a glass of Mezcal. The sensory adventure continues at the ancient ruins of Teotihuacan, and the magnificent Mayan city of Chichen Itza. As the Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes put it, his country ‘has a genius for survival, seduced by the past into the future... the greatness of Mexico is that its history is alive and well’.
A jet-set playground with a colourful history, wonderful beaches, fiery food and the ever-present sound of marching mariachi bands. Mexico is an assault on the senses. Exuberant, colourful and dripping with natural wonders, yet accessorised by just enough chic to entice the most decadent of tastes. A wild child in Mother Nature’s capable hands: bustling streets, mysterious jungle and unblemished beaches. On the Yucatan Peninsula, the porcelain white sands of the Riviera Maya are bathed in sun and lapped by a sapphire sea, whilst inland exploration reveals a landscape peppered with sacred cenotes filled with sweet, fresh water. Mystical Mayan remains evoke a legendary past, whilst Playa del Carmen buzzes with colourful boutiques, busy restaurants and vibrant nightlife. On the other side of the country, cacti-studded craggy peaks form a backdrop to miles of golden sand beaches that line the beautiful Baja California peninsula, their deserted coves offering unmatched seclusion. At the peninsula’s tip lies Cabo San Lucas, the epitome of laid-back indulgence. Mexico’s warm and welcoming people are always ready with a smile. Mural-adorned cantinas serve up their firebrand cuisine of tacos, fajitas and spicy salsas, accompanied by ice-cold margaritas, the lively Mariachi bands providing the soundtrack to the whole sensual feast.
