As featured in Luxury Travel: All-time Favourites

One of our handpicked hotel recommendations for 2017

COMO Cocoa Island is a nirvana for anyone who appreciates the pleasures of luxurious seclusion. A private island, known locally as Makunufushi, it is located in the less developed South Malé Atoll, flanked to the west by a superb diving channel and to the east by a quiet snorkelling reef. Overhanging the water are a number of thatched Dhoni Suites in bleached wood with kajan roofs, along with a selection of one to four-bedroom villas and a number of enchanting white-finished Loft Villas featuring private sundecks and full-length windows overlooking the Indian Ocean. The emphasis is on locally caught seafood at Ufaa Restaurant, where the chefs create delicate South Indian cuisine fused with European influences. Relax at the Faru bar by the infinity pool where bartenders produce refreshing cocktails and mocktails. Slip into the warm sea from your open deck, or venture to the scuba centre for a chance to see turtles, rays, tuna and much more. For utter rejuvenation the COMO Shambhala Retreat presents massages, yoga in the open-air pavilion, Ayurvedic treatments and a large hydrotherapy pool.

Regenerate the reef

Guests at this luxurious nirvana can learn about and get involved in helping to protect the surrounding underwater environment. Through the resort's Coral Propagation Project, you can contribute to the reef's regeneration through sponsoring a frame - these encourage the growth of new coral and for the locals who build them, provides an alternative livelihood. Plant the frame in situ, view its progress online and return to check up on the coral growth on a guided snorkelling tour on your next visit.

Intimacy and romance

Whether you begin the day diving into the lagoon from your private deck or savouring a beach breakfast, days at COMO Cocoa Island are delightfully unhurried. Spot dolphins on a sunset cruise, join a yoga class at the holistic spa or encounter manta rays, butterfly and clownfish on a snorkelling trip.

COMO Cocoa Island, Maldives was voted one of the 'Top 25 Hotels in the World' in the 2015 Trip Advisor Travellers' Choice Awards.

When is the best time to visit Maldives?

The Maldives has a hot, tropical climate with sunshine all year round. The most popular months to visit are between November and April during the north-east monsoon when it is dry with very little wind. Whilst there may be rain during some of the summer months, with ever-changing weather patterns and excellent offers, this is becoming an increasingly popular time to travel.
