Steeped in age-old Malay tradition and facing the South China Sea the architecture reflects the grandeur of 17th century Malay palaces. Accommodation comprises ground floor or first floor Serambi and Bumbung Rooms, with either sea view or tropical landscaped views or single-storey Anjung rooms set along the beach, each complete with day bed, an outdoor bath in its own private alcove and doors that open out onto a canopied veranda. Distinctive dining options encompass above-the-river eating at Di Atas Sungei, serving authentic Malay cuisine; feasting to the sweet strains of live gamelan music on the Teratai Terrace beside the free-form pool and seafood specialities at Nelayan, lit by romantic bamboo torches. Guests can join cooking classes or take off on bicycles to discover hidden village paths. There is a further swimming pool by the beach, while the reefs off Tenggol Island provide spectacular diving. There are guided nature walks, or simply lie back and be pampered in the award-winning spa.
A protected beach lies near to the resort, where the endangered green sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. From mid-August until the end of September, the creatures return to the exact same beach from where they hatched to lay their eggs in the sand. To protect the eggs from predators, the eggs are placed in a nearby hatchery. Witness this spectacle, and maybe have the opportunity to release the young to start their journey of life.
Malaysia and Borneo are generally very hot and humid all year. The winter months from November to April are the most popular time to visit Langkawi, with the monsoon season occurring from July to October. Most rain in Kuala Lumpur falls from March to April and from September to November. Borneo experiences sunshine and rain year round, but the heaviest rainfall normally occurs between November and April.
