As well as giving access to the diverse wildlife of the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, a stay at Founders Camp brings the wonders of the famed Kruger National Park to your doorstep – a spectacular landscape teeming with lion, buffalo, rhino, elephant and leopard. Experienced rangers and trackers many of whom were born and raised in the region will provide invaluable insights into the many conservation projects taking place, as befits the meaning of Londolozi, which is ‘protector of living things’. Ten chalets provide super-comfortable accommodation, each decked out in classic safari style with deep leather couches, black and cream ticking fabric and grand mahogany beds, complemented by en-suite bathrooms. The hospitality is unfussy and exceptionally family friendly, with family suites for two adults and two children interconnected by sky walks whilst children six years and over able to take part in the innovative Cubs Den activity programme. Three of the family units have recently been handsomely upgraded to cater for the growing popularity of multi-generational family visits. There are two game drives daily in open Land Rovers, together with highly informative nature walks; a beautiful yoga deck lies secluded amongst the trees.
A year round destination, but expect cooler weather in the Eastern and Western Capes during winter, between June and August. Mpumalanga stays warm year round with temperatures, humidity and rainfall all increasing in the summer months between October and March. The whales return to the waters around Hermanus from July to November, and the spring months of August and September are particularly colourful along the Garden Route. The prime time for game viewing is generally the drier winter and spring months from April to September when animals frequent the waterholes. During the wetter summer months between October and March, animals can still be viewed but are more widely dispersed – from December to February there may be more sightings of newborn animals.
