From its elevated location overlooking the zoological gardens and urban forest, a Johannesburg icon has been reborn. Courtyards, gardens and fountains create a village effect, the guest rooms and suites located in nine buildings set into the hillside and making the most of the attractive views. The style is chic, cool and contemporary, the rooms equipped with espresso machines, the marble bathrooms complete with rain shower. Five dining venues complement the urban living theme, with offerings that include grills at Flames, the showpiece restaurant, seafood and meats at View or light cuisine in the gardens of Après-Spa. The Spa features an extensive range of treatments, outdoor pool, sauna and steam rooms and a fitness centre.
There is much to do and see in the area - urban regeneration has seen the warehouses and industrial buildings of 44 Stanley and the Maboneng Precinct transformed into stylish independent boutiques, food shops, restaurants and galleries; for golfers, there are 36 courses within an hours drive of the hotel; Soweto, the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill all provide thought-provoking insights into South Africa's recent past; children will love the Lion Park and the caves and fossils at the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site.
A year round destination, but expect cooler weather in the Eastern and Western Capes during winter, between June and August. Mpumalanga stays warm year round with temperatures, humidity and rainfall all increasing in the summer months between October and March. The whales return to the waters around Hermanus from July to November, and the spring months of August and September are particularly colourful along the Garden Route. The prime time for game viewing is generally the drier winter and spring months from April to September when animals frequent the waterholes. During the wetter summer months between October and March, animals can still be viewed but are more widely dispersed – from December to February there may be more sightings of newborn animals.
