South Africa / Gondwana Family Lodge at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Only three hours from Cape Town, Gondwana Lodge makes an ideal safari choice for families. Designed in typical thatched Karoo style, the homestead overlooks Bellair Dam and consists of twelve generously proportioned suites – six on the ground floor with a private deck; six on the upper floor with a private viewing balcony. All are air conditioned, with underfloor heating and en-suite bathroom with shower and freestanding bath. There’s wildlife in abundance to discover in Sanbona, the largest private game reserve in the Western Cape, which is home to white lion, and is completely malaria free. Bird watchers will be particularly impressed by the variety of bird species – well over 200 at the last count. The lodge is 100% family friendly, offering a Kids on Safari programme that will stretch young minds to the maximum. They can follow interpretive trails through the gardens, participate in activities such as bead making and clay making, and visit the sites where the San people left their legacy on the rock faces.

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

A year round destination, but expect cooler weather in the Eastern and Western Capes during winter, between June and August. Mpumalanga stays warm year round with temperatures, humidity and rainfall all increasing in the summer months between October and March. The whales return to the waters around Hermanus from July to November, and the spring months of August and September are particularly colourful along the Garden Route. The prime time for game viewing is generally the drier winter and spring months from April to September when animals frequent the waterholes. During the wetter summer months between October and March, animals can still be viewed but are more widely dispersed – from December to February there may be more sightings of newborn animals.
