Perched high on a hillside overlooking a private wilderness reserve in the Eastern Cape, this welcoming haven epitomises South African chic, its stylish suites and separate three-bedroom house providing lavish accommodation replete with antiques, Jacuzzi baths and sea vista private decks. Ocean suites feature a jet bath and shower with a view; the house has a plunge pool, kitchen, bar and expansive dining area. Culinary presentations are of the highest order, with private dining and beach picnics available. Hot weather brings the opportunity to cool off in the Africa-shaped rock pool; cooler evenings see guests gathering round the blazing fire in the bar. In the spa, treatments are carried out to the sound of bird song and flowing water. Private dining and beach experiences can be reserved, while other recreational attractions include a wellness centre and gym, games room and outdoor pool. Stroll the seven kilometres of unspoilt beach that flank the property, explore the reserve home to 220 species of bird and thirty animal species or visit nearby picture-postcard Port Alfred with its tranquil marina and riverside eateries.
A year round destination, but expect cooler weather in the Eastern and Western Capes during winter, between June and August. Mpumalanga stays warm year round with temperatures, humidity and rainfall all increasing in the summer months between October and March. The whales return to the waters around Hermanus from July to November, and the spring months of August and September are particularly colourful along the Garden Route. The prime time for game viewing is generally the drier winter and spring months from April to September when animals frequent the waterholes. During the wetter summer months between October and March, animals can still be viewed but are more widely dispersed – from December to February there may be more sightings of newborn animals.
