Lit by atmospheric oil lamps at night the ‘colonial glamour’ style suites are ideal for couples, with air conditioning, overhead fans and all the trimmings of a world-class safari destination. The Ivory Presidential Suite features indoor and outdoor baths and comes complete with a private safari vehicle, while the petal-strewn Lourenco Marques Suite with its candle lit bathroom promises pure heaven for honeymooners. Commemorating the Selati railway line that used to run close by from the Transvaal to Mozambique, Selati showcases a historic railway theme, with impressive railway memorabilia adorning the bar and walls of each suite. Savour first class cuisine on decks alongside the riverbed, in the farmhouse-inspired kitchen or open air boma. Daytime and night game drives, as well as exciting bush walks, bring ample to opportunities to watch the Big 5 in their natural habitat.
A year round destination, but expect cooler weather in the Eastern and Western Capes during winter, between June and August. Mpumalanga stays warm year round with temperatures, humidity and rainfall all increasing in the summer months between October and March. The whales return to the waters around Hermanus from July to November, and the spring months of August and September are particularly colourful along the Garden Route. The prime time for game viewing is generally the drier winter and spring months from April to September when animals frequent the waterholes. During the wetter summer months between October and March, animals can still be viewed but are more widely dispersed – from December to February there may be more sightings of newborn animals.
