Alpine aficionados have been keeping La Thuile under their ski helmets for some time now. With the opening of the resort’s first five-star hotel and fast-spreading word of mouth, this former mining village in the Aosta Valley is set to enjoy new levels of popularity. The small but picturesque old village dates back to the twelfth century while a gondola and chairlift quickly transport skiers from the purpose-built lift base into the heart of the ski area. Away from the pistes, non-skiing activities include wooded walking trails, snowshoeing and dog sledding. Unhurried days of leisurely family-friendly skiing, reliable snow conditions and uncrowded slopes with views of Mont Blanc define La Thuile’s ski area. Shared with La Rosière, over the Italian-French border, both are graced with a varied network of red and blue pistes served by fast chairlifts. Challenges for expert skiers include the tree-lined lower runs such as Piste No.3 Franco Berthod, the black run that hosted the Women’s World Cup Downhill and Super G during February 2016. At the base of the slopes is a magic carpet lift and nursery slope, ideal for beginners.
